The only other suggestion I have is to pick up a guitar while you are there (which ever side of the pond you are on) and ship it back using the local postal service before you leave. Of course, that would mean that not only do you have t spend money on the case, you would also have to pay about $100 (or what ever the extra baggage cost is nowadays) extra each way. Something like this: SKB Waterproof Strat/Tele Flight Case would be ideal because it has TSA approved locks and more importantly, wheels.

The best solution would be to have your guitar in a ATA flight case over a regular hard case. So if you are planning to have your guitar as a carry-on, don't. It was so bad that by the time that I boarded the plane, here was no room for my laptop bag and my carry-on had to be gate checked. People will bring their luggage as carry-on just to avoid the checked baggage fee. Seems a bit unnecessary to me.Īre you moving permanently or just visiting? You could also consider shipping it though obviously the cost of international shipping on something as large as a guitar might cost as much as another guitar.I've been on several flights from Europe to the USA and every time, it seems that the airlines are packing more people on these flights. There's a truss rod in the neck applying an opposite force to the strings so I guess if you detuned it AND relaxed the truss rod there would be less tension on the body to make it more durable to being bumped around but that's what your nice hardshell case is for. I'm really not sure what benefit there would be to detuning the guitar. Not ideal and yeah there's definitely a risk to your instrument there so make sure it's well fitted in the case and the latches are secure. I'm fairly certain that if they check it at the gate they're going to run it down to the ground crew and toss it in the cargo hold. If the plane is completely full they MIGHT ask you to check it at the gate in which case having it in a proper hard case is important. Obviously depends on the airline and specific plane you're travelling on but you can absolutely pass it through security and carry it to the gate. I've taken mine in a few times and either stuffed it in the overheads or into one of the storage closets near the entrance. A hardshell acoustic case should fit inside the cabin.
